A person has to try to reduce stressful episodes and depression in order not to trigger the cold sore from coming out.
During a medical research in England they have found out that people who have low amounts of B12 suffer from cold sores. By taking in additional vitamin B12, they have improved their condition. The folic acid in B12 can reduce the painful symptoms.
What to avoid eating in order to reduce the symptoms?

An infected person must avoid or reducing eating chocolates, peanuts, grains, peas, seeds, oatmeal and whole wheat products. Take brewer’s yeast instead. Reduce the intake of coffee as well in order to reduce the chances of triggering the cold sores. Increasing calcium supplements is also recommended.
